Comedy & Cuisine 2017

Comedy & Cuisine is the annual spring fund raiser for Saint Cecilia Cathedral School. Inaugurated in 1997, this evening of gourmet food, silent/live auctions, entertainment and socializing brings together school parents, parishioners, alumni and friends of the parish school. Hundreds of volunteers serve in a wide assortment of roles in a process that requires months of preparation.

2017 Honorary Chairs, Phil and Emily Sauvageau

Our Honorary Chairs for this year’s event are Phil and Emily Sauvageau. Comedy and Cuisine 2017 allows us to celebrate their commitment to our school and our parish. Emily was born and raised here in a family of fourteen children. Emily feels like she really “born and raised” here at Cathedral because when her mother, Betty Barnes, passed away at the young age of 44, it was the Cathedral Parish that encircled her siblings and her father Fred, and helped with all of those children. When asked why they agreed to be Honorary Chairs for the event, Phil said they feel like Cathedral is family and they have complete trust in the Cathedral.

Through the years, Phil has served on parish council  in their early years in the parish,  They also are chairs of the parish capital campaign “Keeping the Promise,” and were instrumental in helping get that campaign off the ground. They were “tickled” when Fr. Gutgsell asked them to lead the campaign to replace the HVAC units on the campus and bring air conditioning to the grade school because Emily’s father worked in the refrigeration industry.

Phil and Emily’s loyalty to Saint Cecilia Cathedral is clear: They came to the Cathedral Parish when he and Emily were going through marriage classes here, and they were married here in 1980.  “All four of our children have attended Saint Cecilia Grade School, and they all received all of their Sacraments at Saint Cecilia Cathedral,” said Phil. “It’s the Cathedral, it’s where Jesus lives, and all of the parishioners have helped Cathedral become part of our family through the years. When we walk through the doors of the Cathedral, we just feel at peace.”

We are excited to fete Phil and Emily Sauvageau as our Honorary Chairs for Comedy and Cuisine. We are proud of their participation in our school and our parish.

2017 Great Alumnus, Adam Herold

Watch the video

Adam Herold grew up in the Saint Cecilia Cathedral neighborhood with a strong independent spirit that carried him through life. Adam was the third son of Lance (CGS ’67, CHS ’71) and Debbie Herold. Like his father and two brothers, Adam attended Saint Cecilia Grade School from kindergarten through eighth grade, graduating in 1999.

Adam joined the U.S. Army in 2005 to serve his country. Adam worked as a signal systems specialist in the Army’s 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (airborne), 25th Infantry Division, based out of Fort Richardson, Alaska. He was deployed to Iraq with his unit in October 2006. His fellow paratroopers knew him as a hard-working, funny guy who helped his friends by volunteering for whatever job needed doing, and by giving them something to laugh about even on tough days. Adam was on a mission in Karbala, Iraq when a truck bomb blew up at a nearby checkpoint. Adam and two fellow soldiers were killed by the explosion. Adam was only 23 years old. His Hawk Battery team remembers him as a paratrooper who “Never quit, never gave up, and never let those around him quit.”

In a letter to Saint Cecilia Cathedral Parish, Major Kenneth J. Grant, United States Marine Corps at the White House Liaison Office, Marine Helicopter Squadron One in Quantico Virginia, honored Adam with words of how proud they were of his service to this country, and offered the hope that “His memory will live on in the good works of Saint Cecilia Cathedral Grade School.”

On July 17, 2010, Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle and Senator Gwen Howard, gathered with military officials on the steps of Saint Cecilia Cathedral Grade School for a formal ceremony to rename Webster Street “Adam Herold Street,” from 38th to 40th Street. Adam’s brother Andy unveiled the new sign. Adam was one of ours, “A Cathedral Cardinal.” Over 150 friends and parishioners were present for the street renaming and a reception afterward in the school cafeteria.

Adam is remembered as a neighborhood boy with a big smile and a kind heart, who went to war to be a peacemaker. His parents, Deb and Lance, endowed “The Adam Herold Scholarship” which is given every year to a Saint Cecilia graduating eighth grader who will attend an Omaha Catholic High School.

We express our gratitude to Deb and Lance Herold for their gracious and generous spirit in granting us the privilege to recognize their son Adam as our Great Alumnus. Some gave all.

Adam’s spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him.

2017 chair couples: Liz and Tom McGuire and Molly and Dan Haske

This year we celebrate 20 years of Comedy and Cuisine! This annual event has become an integral funding source for our school and its tradition of excellence in education, in community and in spiritual formation - a tradition that has become a hallmark of our school in Omaha since 1907.

The 20th annual Comedy and Cuisine dinner and auction will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2017 in the Monsignor Graham Building on the Cathedral campus. Our theme, Celebrating a Roaring 20 Years of Comedy and Cuisine, salutes a proud tradition of personal presence and financial support for Saint Cecilia Cathedral Grade School and to continue its positive impact on our community.

This year's Honorary Chairs are Phil and Emily Sauvageau, proud parents of children who graduated from our school. Our Great Alum for 2017, and first time posthumous honoree, is Adam Herold, who gave his life in service of our country. We are pleased and proud to honor these individuals from our parish and school communities.

The dedication, generosity and hard work over the years of the annual Comedy and Cuisine event has raised over $2 million in support of our nationally recognized, award-winning school. We invite you to show your appreciation for this proud tradition and the mission for educational excellence at Saint Cecilia Cathedral Grade School.

We’re bringing the band back together, back to Comedy and Cuisine! Bring your friends and dancing shoes to cut a rug to the Personics. The dancing will begin after the Live Auction, ending the night on a fun note! The Personics are a 4-piece cover band wrecking crew that everyone will want to dance to. They play a range from Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, and Neil Diamond to Matchbox 20, the B-52s, the Violent Femmes, the Go-Go's, the Stray Cats, Sheryl Crow, James, INXS, Jimmy Eat World, and Pink. A smattering of their work can be found at

We want you and we need you!!

If you would like to attend this fun event or help underwrite it, please contact Brigid Morrison Burbridge at the parish office 402-551-2313 or download this form and get it back to us.

New silent auction item!!

We have something new this year for a section of the silent auction tables. We are adding “sign-up parties”! A sign-up party is a pre-determined event that is planned with a date, time, location, and number of guests that will be hosted. When it is silent auction time, the events would be described in detail including how much per person and how many guests may attend. The party would be a first come bid. Once all the spots are filled, that item will be closed.
